Smart Film: Privacy as a System

How PDLC smart film changes glass from transparent to opaque on demand, and what should be considered when specifying it.

Privacy becomes a controlled state

Traditional privacy is fixed: a wall, a blind or permanently obscured glass. PDLC smart film changes that model by allowing a glass surface to switch between transparent and opaque states on demand. That makes privacy part of the control system rather than a permanent architectural condition.

How PDLC switching works

The film contains liquid-crystal material that changes optical behaviour when electrical power is applied. In one state the glass appears clear; in the other it scatters light and becomes opaque. The result is a fast visual transition without moving parts.

Current NERVEN technical data

According to NERVEN’s current Smart Film source material, the system is specified with switching in under one second, operating voltage in the 48–60V AC range and power consumption around 3–5 W/m². The same source lists up to 98% UV and 80% IR blocking figures, with an operating-temperature range from -20°C to +70°C. These values should be verified against the final supplied configuration and project conditions before specification.

Control options

Smart film can be treated like a controllable architectural layer. NERVEN material lists remote control, sensors, mobile control and integration with Google Assistant and Alexa among the available control directions. The correct architecture depends on the project: a single meeting room has different needs from a clinic, hotel or multi-room office.

Where it makes sense

  • Meeting and executive rooms: switch between openness and privacy without adding curtains or blinds.
  • Healthcare: create privacy in consultation or treatment spaces while keeping surfaces visually clean.
  • Hospitality: manage privacy between bathroom, bedroom or suite zones.
  • Homes: use glass partitions without sacrificing privacy when needed.
  • Exhibitions and museums: turn transparent surfaces into controlled presentation layers.

What should be coordinated before installation?

Power routing, transformer or controller location, glass dimensions, film segmentation, cable concealment and the desired default state should all be reviewed early. If the project requires automation, the control interface should be confirmed before finishes are complete.

Smart film is not only a material choice

The strongest applications treat PDLC as part of the architecture and control strategy. The glass, electrical supply, user interface and automation logic should be coordinated together. That is what turns a film product into a complete privacy system.
